The Match first kicked off back in 2018 with the epic kickoff match of Tiger Woods versus Phil Mickelson. It was a $9 Million winner take all prize at Shadow Creek Golf Course in Las Vegas. Phil won the prize on the 22nd hole.
The second installment was dubbed Champions for Charity. In this event, both Woods and Mickelson competed again. This time they both picked up partners. Tiger partnered with Peyton Manning and Phil partnered with Tom Brady. This match was won late by Woods and Manning.
The Match has continued with different versions over the years with a combination of golf stars, and sports celebrities. Kind of like a lot of sequels, most of the recent match ups, while entertaining, didn’t have the big fight hype.
All of that has changed as an agreement was just announced that a LIV Golf versus PGA TOUR match is going to happen. Bryson DeChambeau and Brooks Kopeka will play against Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy. The match will take place in mid-December on TNT Network. While the format has not been finalized, they’re teasing a Ryder Cup type format.
The divide in men’s professional golf continues. Any chance to get all the best players in the world together is more refreshing than ever. The only thing that may be more exciting this time of the year would be a LIV Golf versus PGA TOUR match, finally.
