The Open Championship: Pros Versus Pot Bunkers

As predicted, day one of The Open championship was highlighted by pros in some tough spots in pot bunkers. Justin Thomas carded an eleven over day one total including a quadruple bogey on the 18th hole due to his ball finding a terrible lie in one of the pot bunkers at the green.

If you missed the broadcast, here are just a few of the players who found themselves in unenviable lies in the pot bunkers at Royal Liverpool.

There were so many more instances of trouble in pot bunkers which lead to some big numbers on the scorecards. We are just getting started golf fans. To me, it feels like we are getting some of that “true test of golf.” that some were saying was missing at the United States Open this year. As a reminder, Tiger Woods won the Open Championship here at Royal Liverpool in 2006. The amazing statistic for that week was that he didn’t hit into one bunker the entire tournament.
