The Snail: Pro Golf’s Most Creative Putting Stroke

Both professional golfer and amateur alike have been in search of the perfect putting stroke for hundreds of years. Professional golfer Mark Hubbard may not have found it but he has definitely gotten creative and employed some way out of the box thinking. Thus, let’s introduce you all to “the snail.”

There are so many things to love about the stroke. While certainly almost shockingly different than anything most of our eyes have ever seen attempted on a putting green it also has so many positives. Digging into the fundamentals, it starts with a straight right arm that is presented in showmanship fashion announcing to all those around that this will not be some boring, normal putting stoke. Then, while extending that right arm, Hubbard reaches way down and presents the star of the show, the right pinky finger. After wrapping his right arm over the putter shaft, he next wraps the pinky finger under the shaft near the putter head with now full extension of the right arm. Then, on with the show.

Hubbard has said it’s super effective within the five foot range. To his due, he has even employed it on the course during rounds on the PGA Tour. Most recently, Hubbard used “the snail” on the raucous 16th green at the Phoenix Open PGA Tour stop. It worked and he drained an eight footer. Now, he seems to have only employed it in cases where there wasn’t a lot on the line so far. It would be a truly momentous scene to see “the snail” putting stroke brought out with a tournament on the line. The snail putting stroke could be like the “Billy Baroo” putter from caddyshack. It could be his go-to shot when you have to deliver. Kudos to Mark Hubbard for his creativity and if anything entertaining the crowds and having some fun on the course.
